Hi Ashley thanks for writing in with the following hallmark question:
" I have a gold diamond ring with these markings... CF a turned square that looks like a diamond symbol then 10k. On the other side are 2 circles. I don't know what this means. I got the ring from my grandma but I'm not sure what the markings mean. Can someone help me?"
Is it possible for you to send in a photo of the mark? You can upload in a follow-up submission. There are a few CF marks on jewelry and the shape of the letters etc provide vital clues.
Gold is marked in two ways. Either the ?karat? is shown, like ?10k? like on your ring or the NUMBER that means ?10k? is used. The number for 10k is 417.
What we buy gold it should be what we are told it is. That is why there are federal regulations on the marking of precious metal articles. Different countries have slightly different standards for marking gold jewelry but these standards must be met for items made inside that country or imported from elsewhere.
