Hi Shirley thank you writing in about your grandfather's gold wedding band. You might be interested to know that 22 karat gold wedding bands are the traditional chose for antique gold wedding bands.
For example, in keeping with British Royal Family tradition, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall's wedding rings were crafted from gold from the Clogau St David?s mine in Bontddu, North Wales.
Previous royal wedding rings have been made from 22 karat gold from the same mine. Some indeed from the very same nugget of gold! In keeping with tradition, from 1576 - 1798 only the highest carat gold (22 carat) was used.
UK British Hallmarks usually consist of 3-5 marks, not necessarily aligned or oriented the same. Marks include maker's mark, Town mark, Standard (Purity) mark, Date Letter, and Duty mark.
A crown followed by the 22 carat mark, each in a rectangle was used in the UK - on 22ct GOLD from 1844 - 1974.
It is hard for me to visualize the other marks. Shirley you are welcome to upload a photo of mark in a follow-up submission. Try to take a close up photo a if your camera does not have a close-up setting, you may want to consider scanning it as best as possible and we will take it from there by enhancing the image using our software.
