There are instruments that by the degree of pollution in a metal can determine when it was allied. But this does not have to be the same age as the piece as the piece might have been made from re-used "old gold".
For example, if we have to repair vintage jewelry or an antique piece of jewelry, we prefer to do it with gold from antique wedding rings in order to get the same color and patinas.
