The first thing I thought of when I heard you had an anchor on the ring was the Birmingham Assay Office. I have put a link to their site below.

Thanks for the speedy responses! by: Anonymous
Thanks Donna. I'm afraid I don't know the composition of the background material. Yes, it is very pale, almost white on white.
Anonymous - No, the anchor is sideways. Thanks for your input about the W.

Is it A Shell Cameo? by: Donna
Hello Deb
thanks so much for sharing this piece. Amazing condition really, for a ring, which clearly has seen a few years come and go. Shell Cameos generally are not all that suitable for rings, which get a lot of wear and tear.
Do you know what the actual material is made from? It looks very pale and the background of the carving looks like it is a soft coral color? No way would it be made of lava, as it wouldn't have lasted long, it being a ring. I'm thinking maybe it's coral? Best, Donna

Upright Anchor On Antique Gold Band by: Anonymous
Hi Deb
one possibility, worth investigating - Hayden W. Wheeler & Co ( the number of carat varies, on Gold Rings, Manufacturing Jewelers and Watch Importers, New York, NY, USA) ca. 1897 - 1930s. BTW the anchor is upright.
