I have a 9k rose gold double Albert chain, quite rudimentary in style. It has S.Bros with the dot in the centre not bottom like a full stop and all the letters appear to be of equal size. It has 3 boxes consisting of 9 .375 and an anchor, with absolutely nothing else. No letter no number nothing. Anyone any idea of its date or history? Thankyou

Roman gold ring with intaglio by: Anonymous
I have a gold ring and it has Intaglio and a soldiers bass, it has a mark inside the room that is an anchor. I see no other marks on it. I was wondering when it could have been made. it looks ancient and also was wondering if there’s any value to it other than the gold. Thank you

Hi Hazel
this thread has morphed into an S bros jewelry mark - Hazel investigate this mark further starting here: Swain Bros who were manufacturing silversmiths, in Birmingham, UK - ca 1870s - 1940s.
The anchor you describe is the Birmingham office assay-mark, the three digits is the caratage and describes the quality of the gold.
The letter e is the date year. This ring is described as a Buckle Ring, popular during the Victorian days of yore, a symbol of love and affection, representing giver and receiver were a good match like a belt and it's buckle.
With Best Wishes,
Yvonne

Birmingham Marks by: Anonymous
Hi thank you for writing in with the following hallmark question:
"I have a piece of gold hallmarked A Bros (this would appear to be in a triangular shape - it has a large A centrally with bros on the right hand slope of the A - and may have had Ltd down the right hand side).
It also has a horizontal anchor in a square with another square next to it containing an X. The only other hallmarks are a 9 and .375. just wondered how old it is and where it came from as I think it may be a bit old as it's been in the family for years."
This a Birmingham maker's mark - it will usually be on silver though. There is a lot of confusion about the anchor on its side . The vertical anchor is town mark for Birmingham. It is where the piece was assayed. Also it's not uncommon to find jewelry on which the anchor appears on its side and unless it is a pseudo British hallmark it usually means the piece is gold. This piece is also stamped with carat marking to dispel any doubts. The decimal point before the carat mark .375 indicates the piece is older than 1931.
The Birmingham maker is - Adie Brothers Birmingham, UK - ca 1920s - 1940s
