First Step in Valueing Your Cameos
by: Anonymous

Good Morning Jodey

thank you for writing in and sharing your lovely collection of cameo jewelry with us. The subject on all of the cameo are the profile of the head and shoulders of a lovely lady, and this cameo subject is by far the most common cameo subject.

The cameo earrings look to be clip-on vintage cameo earrings made for non-pierced ears, with the royal French lily symbol, the descendant of the ancient Egyptian lotus flower attaching the cameo ovals to the metal clip-on part.

Vintage jewelry is the sustainable alternative to brand new jewelry, and becoming increasingly popular, so much so, that NEW vintage style earring parts, such as ear finding clip-ons can be purchased on the internet now, made in China. Costume, vintage, and antique jewelry investors please be aware of this marketing development when purchasing "vintage" clip-on earrings.

Jodey, the first step in the cameo valuation process, is to ascertain the material chosen for the cameos. Are they all made from shell or are the cameos a combination of shell and imitations? There are many imitation cameos on the market and in gold mounts too. Can you tell if the cameo itself, not the surround (which is the metal part) is made of natural shell, plastic or hard stone? Or do you need help in determining the material also?

Kind Regards
Yvonne
