Concerning your heirloom diamond engagement ring - the metals are marked for Platinum and !8 ct gold. Most likely the setting around the diamonds are made from 18 ct gold as platinum is an extremely hard metal to work with and if the ring is hand fabricated it's easier to work around the diamonds using 18 carat gold.
Concerning the maker's mark of A C They could be initials; Is there an ampersand between the letters? Or a dot of any kind? There are a number of possibilities here. Theses details might seem insignificant but crucial info.
